Welcome

Hi–and welcome to the New Cambridge Observer. As a long-time resident of Cambridge, Massachusetts, I’ve been chronicling life here  for more than 25 years. It’s a place that has changed–from seedy Harvard Square with many bookstores to what Camille Paglia once called  the “Disneyworld of academe.” Once- empty lots are now filled with laboratories and high tech companies;  bookstores have been replaced by clothing stores, banks, and restaurants…all of which I’ve followed from a perch in a small apartment overlooking the Cambridge Common.

In this blog, I’ll be writing about my experiences–some personal, some professional. Just this week, I attended a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Harvard’s Nieman Foundation, a party marking the transition of one of Harvard Square’s few remaining independent bookstores to new owners; a Cornell alumni gathering at Google headquarters that focused on the new G-phones, and another on the future of life sciences. I’ll also be writing about my experiences as a member of the Senior Common Room of Quincy House, at Harvard;  art exhibits, social events, business, technology,  life events and people as they strike my fancy (and funnybone).  My goals are to inform, educate, amuse, market my books and articles and, I hope, my communications consulting business. (More about the last at www.harriscom.com).

PS–This is the “New” Cambridge Observer–because I’m daunted  by the “Cambridge Observer” published in the early 1890s by undergraduates at Cambridge University, in England. One contributor to the latter was the young Bertrand Russell,  among many other really smart guys.

Anita, James Franco’s grandmother, Mitzi Verne, and your mother, Sara, are 2nd cousins (as am I to them). That makes James Franco my 2nd cousin twice removed (2 generations). That makes James Franco your 3rd cousin once removed. Sounds like British royalty doesn’t it? The Bialosky’s (Mitzi Verne) and the Shapiro’s (Sara Harris, me, etc.) intertwine about 5 times in 200 years. They were from the same area in what is now Lithuania and all came to the U.S. in the late 1800’s.
My great-grandmother’s name was Sara Hanna Bialosky Shapiro. This is also your mother’s great-grandmother.

What do you think?
